Flooding The Information Technologies Department would like to thank everyone for their patience during the recent flood that happened in the basement. If you’re not familiar with what happened, the IT department started taking on water late in the evening last Monday night and was under 3 inches of water before the flooding was stopped. During this time there was some water damage along the base boards and to some IT equipment and the Learning Center was knocked out of commission. We are also very thankful to the students for understanding why the Learning Center was closed and allowing us to do what was needed to bring it back up and running. Security/Hoaxes We would like to remind everyone to be very cautious about e-mails that you’ll receive either in your personal e-mail boxes or at work. Especially during the holidays, there will be many opportunities for spam e-mailers to take advantage of falsifying deals on the Internet and scamming people for money. The sites listed below can help decipher between scams and real e-mails. Hoaxbusters UMB CITS
Keep in mind, that with our government cracking down on spam e-mailing, many of these companies are moving more and more to spyware and pop-ups. These nuisances may be combated through software such as Ad-aware or Spybot to remove software that these companies will install into your computer without your knowledge. Both of these programs, whose Web sites are listed below, have created very good products that are easy to use and very effective. Ad-aware Spybot
More information regarding Internet safety will be provided whenever possible in each newsletter. --Penn Wilbert
