Welcome to the first issue of Mdental Digest. The goal of this e-newsletter is to provide timely, useful, and interesting information for the Dental School staff, students, and faculty. As the editor, I look forward to receiving all comments, suggestions, and information.  Remember, this is a collective undertaking. The newsletter needs your input. 

Seasonal Safety Warning

Please be alert as you travel throughout the areas immediately surrounding the campus, especially at dusk. There have been reports of a mugging and other suspicious activity in the nighborhood. The campus police offer a variety of public safety services, including walking escorts and escort vans. For more information, call 6-6882 or visit the University Police online.

Toys for Tots 

 Psi Omega Dental Fraternity asks that you help support the United States Marine Corps in its mission to  make the holidays brighter for children across the country. Bring in Your NEW, UNWRAPPED TOYS * or MONETARY DONATION (checks payable to “Toys for Tots Foundation” ) to one of the contacts below, and we’ll make sure they get to the USMC in time to deliver for the winter holidays!

Congratulations to...

J. Anthony von Fraunhofer, PhD: The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Science Council of the United Kingdom have conferred the designation of Chartered Scientist on Dr. von Fraunhofer, professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Sharon M. Gordon, DDS, MPH, PhD, associate professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Raymond A. Dionne, DDS, PhD, head of the Pain and Neurosensory Mechanisms Branch, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health, co-authored the cover article in the November issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, "The Integration of Clinical Research into Dental Therapeutics: The Role of the Astute Clinician."

 Marion C. Manski, RDH, MS, was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society after completing the MS program in May with a 4.0 average. Phi Kappa Phi is an honor society that recognizes academic excellence.

Mark A. Reynolds, DDS, PhD, and Gerald Bowers (Professor Emeritus) were the recipients of the 2004 R. Earl Robinson Regeneration Award, which was presented through the American Academy of Periodotology. This award is presented to the author(s) of the peer-reviewed published paper that has contributed most to the knowledge of periodontal regeneration in a given calendar year. The paper, “Factors influencing the outcome of regenerative therapy in mandibular class II furcations: Part I” appeared in the Journal of Periodontology.   

In October, Dr. Reynolds was inducted into the International College of Dentists. The International College of Dentists is a leading honorary dental organization dedicated to the recognition of outstanding professional achievement and meritorious service and the continued progress of the profession of dentistry for the benefit of all humankind

Werner Seibel: The Student Clinicians-American Dental Association Board of Governors has selected Dr. Seibel as the 2005 Burton C. Borgelt/SCADA Faculty Advisor Award. The annual award is presented to faculty advisors who have distinguished themselves in service to their school's Student Clinician Program.
